Monmouth County Superintendent of Schools

The County Superintendent of Schools, as a representative of the Commissioner of Education, is responsible for working with local school districts, teachers, parents, and students to assist districts in accomplishing or maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations.

According to Title 18A:7-8 General Powers and Duties, each county superintendent shall:

  • Visit and examine from time to time all of the schools under his/her general supervision and exercise general supervision over them in accordance with the rules prescribed from time to time by the state board.
  • Keep himself/herself informed as to the management, methods of instructional and discipline and the courses of study and textbooks in use, the condition of the school libraries, and the condition of the real and personal property, particularly in respect to the construction, heating, ventilation and lighting of school buildings, in the local school districts under his/her general supervision, and make recommendations in connection therewith;
  • Advise with the counsel of the boards of education of the local districts under his/her general supervision and of any other district of the county when so requested, in relations to the performance of their duties;
  • Render a report to the commissioner annually on or before September 1, in the manner and form prescribed by him of such matter relating to the schools under his/her jurisdiction as the commissioner shall require; and
  • Perform such other duties as shall be prescribed by law.
