The Monmouth County Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Opportunities study is evaluating the feasibility of implementing measures to improve the speed, reliability, and flexibility of bus service in Monmouth County, while also making these services more customer friendly. These measures can be packaged together to transform existing local and express bus services into a BRT system, or can provide spot improvements that improve travel times, ease of use, and system reliability. The study will be crafted to define BRT and the role it can play in Monmouth County, and identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the implementation of bus priority measures and BRT elements along critical corridors in Monmouth County. The study is being conducted jointly by the Monmouth County Division of Planning and the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, in conjunction with Together North Jersey.

The County has formed a Steering Advisory Committee to help guide the study, look at existing services, and help develop potential system improvement recommendations. The consultant team assisting with the study is currently working on documenting existing conditions, including ridership data, route data, trip generation analysis, and supportive infrastructure, and is developing study goals and objectives. As part of this effort, we are conducting a survey for bus riders to let us know how they currently use public transit and what improvements are needed.

Based on this existing conditions information, the consultants will then conduct a detailed Strengths/Weaknesses/Opportunities/Threats (SWOT) analysis, which will lead to recommendations for the best and most appropriate application of BRT strategies in Monmouth County. The consultant will then combine all the research performed during this study into a final report. All of these technical materials and the final report will be presented to the Steering Advisory Committee, with the study conclusions presented to the Monmouth County Planning Board.

This project is funded by Together North Jersey, an initiative funded in part through a Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and through a grant from the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, which is allocating U.S. Department of Transportation funding. Together North Jersey is a collaborative partnership dedicated to strengthening the region's economy and improving access to good jobs, quality schools, safe and stable neighborhoods, a healthy environment, fresh food, and civic and cultural resources.
