Transportation

Monmouth County's central location in the Boston-Washington Corridor endows it with a first-rate network of roads, rail, air and water transportation assets that link it to major markets and the world. New York City is within an hour's drive; Newark International Airport, which is undergoing a multi-million-dollar expansion and renovation, is a half-hour away, as is Port Elizabeth. Philadelphia is about an hour and one half by road.

Highways

There are 2,756 miles of highway within the county, including those linking it with the New York City metropolitan area and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Garden State Parkway, Interstate 195 (also known as the James J. Howard Interstate Highway), U.S. Route 9, and 10 state routes traverse the region. Truck service and facilities are also available throughout the county.

Air Carriers

Companies requiring air service can rely on nearby Newark International Airport, located in Essex and Union counties. Newark International covers 2,027 acres, and has four major runways, providing service to nearly 31 million passengers in 1997 and handling more than one million tons of air cargo.

Monmouth Executive Airport in Wall Township, which also includes an office and industrial park, is centrally located to serve corporate and personal aircraft. It has a full range of services and facilities and is easily accessed from Route I-195 and Route 34.

Rail Freight

Two freight carriers, CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern connect rail freight users in Monmouth County to the North American railway network, in a shared service territory. Most routes are jointly owned by these two railroad companies, and provide shippers with an opportunity for competitive cost-effective railway transportation. The physical delivery of shipments in Monmouth County is handled by Conrail, which is jointly owned by CSX and Norfolk, and serves as their local agent.

Passenger Rail

Passenger rail service is available via the New Jersey Transit's North Jersey Coast Line, which providesfrequent daily service to Newark and midtown Manhattan's Penn Station from 13 locations in Monmouth County. In addition, connecting PATH rapid transit service is also available from Newark Penn Station to lower Manhattan, New York. The North Jersey Coast Line also plans to provide service to the new Newark International Airport Monorail Station starting in 2001. Amtrak rail service is available at the New Brunswick and Metro Park stations located in nearby Middlesex County, as well as the Newark station served by the New Jersey Coast Line.

Intrastate and Interstate Bus Service

New Jersey Transit also provides extensive interstate and intrastate bus service from Monmouth County to major employment centers in northern New Jersey and New York. New Jersey Transit, Suburban and Academy buses provide frequent daily service to Newark, Jersey City, and midtown Manhattan's Port Authority Bus Terminal and Wall Street in lower Manhattan from along the Route 9 corridor.

In partnership with Academy Bus Lines, bus service is available to Wall Street or the Port Authority Bus Terminal from the PNC Bank Arts Center park/ride facilities and other park/rides along the Garden State Parkway. New Jersey Transit also operates limited bus service to New York from sections of Englishtown, Manalapan, Marlboro, Matawan, Aberdeen, and Freehold. An extensive local bus service is available throughout the county, and limited bus service is also available from southern Monmouth County to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Senior Transportation Services

Senior citizens and residents with special needs can utilize the Monmouth County Special Citizen's AreaTransportation (S.C.A.T.), which provides transportation throughout the Monmouth County area. Operated through the Monmouth County Division of Transportation, the service charges a small, nominal fee for taking passengers to medical appointments or to area stores and other locations.

Ferry Services

Ferry services operating between Highlands, Atlantic Highlands, Keyport and Manhattan are another option for those traveling between Monmouth County and New York.
