Equipment

Without the proper equipment it is impossible to conduct a comprehensive mosquito program. The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders has been supportive to the Advisory Board by providing the necessary equipment to allow the staff to conduct source reduction/water management activities as well as surveillance, larviciding and adulticiding. Each year the Board members prepare a "capital budget" that is submitted to the Freeholders for appropriate action.

The Advisory Board participates in the New Jersey State Mosquito Control Commission Equipment Use Program. The State provides the Commissioners with a microscope for mosquito identification work, a John Deere gator for water management projects, and a Revco ultra-low temperature freezer for conducting mosquito-borne disease surveillance.

Vehicles

The Board members include funds in each annual budget to replace a minimum of two vehicles. The staff prides itself on the appearance of their vehicles. All vehicles are washed on a weekly basis or more frequently if needed. Oil is changed every 3,000 miles. The operator checks each vehicle on a daily basis. Area vendors that specialize in the type of service required make repairs to vehicles. Since 1993 all new trucks are white, so that they are easily distinguishable from vehicles operated by other County agencies.

Unneeded equipment will be disposed by public auction advertised and held by the County of Monmouth.
