Swine Flu Updated Information

Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza that regularly cause outbreaks of influenza among pigs. Human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection have been identified in the United States and internationally.  Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the infection and if more people have been infected with similar swine influenza viruses.

The Monmouth County Health Department public health nurses, environmental health specialists, and communicable disease staff are working with state and local health partners to monitor the health of Monmouth County residents and are gathering the latest information on the swine flu outbreak. 

Also, the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) is working closely with state and local health and animal officials on investigations into these cases.  For additional information, you can visit the CDC website at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/swine/. The CDC plans to update their Web site each day at 3:00 p.m. with new information.

The Monmouth County Health Department will be the lead agency if a public health emergency related to swine flu or any other public health issue is declared in Monmouth County.  Check back to this Web page for updated county information or to read press releases related to swine flu monitoring in Monmouth County.
