FREEHOLD – The Monmouth County Police Academy graduated 36 police officers recently, all of whom are employed with various police departments as special law enforcement officers.

 

The graduating class trained for 600 hours over the course of 41 weeks in order to complete the 33rd Basic Course for Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers.
 
In her commencement address, Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry congratulated the class for its dedication and hard work.
 
“It seems now more than ever, the responsibilities of law enforcement are far more complex,” Burry said. “The growing disregard for human life is a direct and real threat to public safety and to our police officers, in particular. Whatever the basis for the threat, our police officers need community support to resolve it. That cooperation begins with special officers like those we see tonight.” 
 
She also invoked the words of Thomas Jefferson, who in the Declaration of Independence referenced the important role government has in providing for public safety. “Now you know where you rank on the list of importance,” she said.
 
Police Academy Director John G. McCormack said the new officers are fully trained and ready to begin protecting citizens in the communities they will serve. As police officers, he said, they will be held to a higher standard of conduct and are expected to demonstrate an abiding sense of fairness.
