Older Americans celebrated by Freeholders
FREEHOLD – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders has proclaimed the month of May 2008 as “Older Americans Month” and called upon all citizens to honor and celebrate the contributions made by older residents.
The theme of this year’s Older Americans Month is “Working Together for Strong, Healthy and Supportive Communities.” This focus helps to showcase the importance of older community members and the partnerships that help them to continue to live independently.
“Senior members of our families – whether they are grandparents, parents, relatives or neighbors – provide us with the experience and historical perspective that enable us to move forward and contribute to our nation’s greatness and prosperity, ” said Freeholder Barbara J. McMorrow, liaison the county’s Office on Aging.
“Serving as examples to others, seniors regularly engage in acts of compassion. They teach young children how to read, they help those who are hospitalized and they bring comfort and care to their families and neighbors.”
“Older Americans Month” originated with a presidential proclamation by President John F. Kennedy in May 1963 in celebration of the unique achievements and contributions of senior citizens.
The Board of Chosen Freeholders champions the diversity and the richness of the county’s older adult population by providing outreach and support through the County Office on Aging.
