September is national Library Card Sign-up Month
It’s time to rediscover your county libraries
MANALAPAN, NJ – September is Library Card Sign-up Month and residents are encouraged to discover, or rediscover, the county library branches by checking out what’s new and signing up for a library card if they do not have one already.
“Today’s library has so much to offer,” said Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the county’s library system. “And to help residents get a sense of all the resources available to them, the county library system is being featured as September’s Department of the Month on the county Web site. This feature gives an inside look at some of the services provided by the 12 branch libraries.”
The Monmouth County Library System serves its community – from toddlers to teens, young professionals to seniors and new readers to scholars. With books, the Internet, events such as free movies and concerts and services such as English classes and job-seeking resources, the Monmouth County Library really does have it all.
In keeping with the library’s motto, “Read, Explore, Access, Discover!, having a library card fully opens up a wealth of opportunities and information. Cardholders can check out books, movies, magazines, music CDs, eBooks, and more – all for free with their library card.”
During Library Card Sign-up Month, library users are encouraged to visit their local libraries to borrow materials, research topics using a variety of print and online resources, get on the Internet via wired access, or bring a laptop to enjoy wireless hotspot connectivity at all branches. Patrons can even enjoy free programs, both educational and entertainment.
The Monmouth County Library reminds parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.
To sign up for a library card, visit the Headquarters Library in Manalapan, Eastern Branch in Shrewsbury, or any other branch location including Allentown, Colts Neck, Hazlet, Holmdel, Howell, Marlboro, Ocean Township, Oceanport, Wall Township and West Long Branch. Cards for the Monmouth County Library System are free to anyone living or owning property in one of the library’s member municipalities and $100 annually for nonmembers.
Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a campaign promoted by public libraries nationwide in cooperation with the American Library Association (ALA).
