Mosquitoes, roads & traffic lights on county TV show
August show available on cable networks and YouTube
FREEHOLD – “Monmouth In Focus,” the county’s monthly televised program, is on television and posted to the Monmouth County YouTube channel this August with a look at the county’s efforts to control the mosquito population and maximize American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding for county road and traffic signal projects.
“This month’s installment of Monmouth in Focus gives an overview of the current, hands-on efforts to tackle transportation and public health and safety issues in Monmouth County,” Freeholder Deputy Director Robert D. Clifton said.
One half of the August show focuses on the county’s ARRA allocation of $11.6 million that is being used for Monmouth County transportation projects and the county’s efforts to improve the Monmouth County Courthouse and the county Prosecutor’s Office facilities.
“ARRA funding is being used for the reconstruction of the bridge and dam on Sweetman’s Lane in Manalapan and the paving of 33 miles of county roadway,” Freeholder John D’Amico explains during the segment. “The county is also replacing county traffic signals at 40 intersections and providing battery backup for each. This is important because in case of a power failure, these traffic lights will continue to work and police can focus their attention on other matters.”
The other half of the August show focuses on the county’s mosquito and tick control efforts.
“In viewing the show, residents can find out about some of the behind the scenes efforts that the county’s Mosquito Extermination Commission uses to keep tabs on the mosquito and tick populations,” said Clifton, who gives an overview of the commission’s year round work in the segment. “Most importantly, we show residents some of the things that they can do to help reduce mosquitoes in their yards.”
“Monmouth In Focus” is a 30 minute program that features county government. 2010 shows have looked at the health department, library and park systems and Sheriff and Surrogate’s offices. These shows may be viewed on the county Web site at
www.visitmonmouth.com and YouTube.
“Monmouth In Focus” airs on the Comcast and Cablevision local access channels, Brookdale Television and municipal public access channels in Howell, Freehold, Long Branch, Middletown, Millstone and Ocean Township. Check with your local access provider for the dates and times.
“This is an opportunity to bring the county’s services directly into the homes of our residents,” Clifton said. “Along with the county’s news-oriented Web site, e-mail subscriptions and Facebook and Twitter postings, we are continuing efforts to communicate consistently with residents about services.”
