June ushers in summer in Monmouth County
FREEHOLD, NJ – Summer is about to make its presence known in Monmouth County. It is best to wear your most comfortable shoes because you will be busy!
You could be at the beach, parks, lakes, car shows, horse shows, a historic re-enactment or a festival focused on music, food or the arts. The Monmouth County Department of Tourism's Calendar of Events contains listings of all these things as well as flea markets, outdoor concerts, tours and dancing. Most activities and attractions are linked to Web sites and provide details.
That county's tourism calendar is the most comprehensive, up-to-date list of activities for nearly every taste and interest. You can find it at www.visitmonmouth.com or call 800-523-2587 to have the calendar and other tourism information mailed to you within 24 hours.
The biggest event is the nationally known Battle of Monmouth Re-Enactment June 19-20 at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Manalapan. Throngs of people watch as the battle that turned the tide in the Revolutionary War is recreated.
Many of the world's best beach volleyball players are coming to the Belmar June 25-27 for the AVP Volleyball Tournament. There's also the George Sheehan Classic run, in Red Bank, June 18-19 for a weekend of events for children and competitive runners. If you think you run like a racehorse, Monmouth Park offers Running for ReRun, a mile fun run on the track June 27.
All that activity can increase your appetite, but Monmouth County has that covered, too. The 24th annual New Jersey Seafood Festival is in Silver Lake Park, Belmar, June 11-13, where the Shore's best chefs headline a weekend of live entertainment and crafters. The 3rd annual International Festival in Keyport offers food from around the globe, plus seafood from the Keyport Fishery.
The Jersey Shore Partnership's 14th annual Summer Celebration on June 7 at Sandy Hook presents samplings from some of the finest chefs and restaurants, plus live entertainment. Want to catch your own fish? The Go Fish children's fishing tournament is at Sylvan Lake in Bradley Beach June 6, and the 16th annual JCAA Fluke Tournament June 12 launches from the Manasquan River, Shark River and Sandy Hook on June 12.
Horses star this month, too. The Horse Park of New Jersey in Allentown hosts the Garden State CDE June 4-6, the Jersey Classic Horse Show June 11-13 and the New Jersey Half Arabian Association June 19-20.
