Connecting Monmouth County
Summit to focus on safe non-motorized transportation network
WEST LONG BRANCH – Monmouth County's 7th annual Transportation Summit will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4, in the Young Auditorium of Bey Hall at Monmouth University, 400 Cedar Ave.
The summit will provide Monmouth County residents and municipal officials with a comprehensive view of the county's existing non-motorized transportation network of bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The network includes the county's Henry Hudson Trail that extends from Freehold Borough to Atlantic Highlands and the local and state project known as the Edgar Felix Bikeway from Wall to Manasquan.
"As the demand for transportation alternatives increases, it is incumbent on this county to respond accordingly." Freeholder John D'Amico said. "Getting people from Point A to Point B safely and in non-motorized ways is a viable transportation alternative and this summit is an excellent first step forward in this process."
In addition to Freeholder D'Amico, speakers will include:
- Senator Sean Kean, New Jersey State Senator
- Mary K. Murphy, Executive Director, North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority
- Elise Bremer-Nei, Safe Routes to School Program Coordinator, NJ Dept. of Transportation
- Ranjit Walia, Senior Project Manager, Voorhees Transportation Center
- Elizabeth Thompson, Senior Planner, North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority
The program will discuss ways that facilities can be created, expanded and improved. The speakers will talk about strategies, programs and funding sources as well as local efforts already underway.
"Walking and biking are golden opportunities to both improve our residents' quality of life and mitigate the strain on our existing transportation network." Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry said.
The Monmouth County Transportation Council, an advisory group to the Monmouth County Planning Board, presents the latest information about transportation projects planned and under way in the county to residents and local officials.
