Freeholders present two Citizen Service Awards
Hairdresser, New York ferry service recognized by board

FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders presented two more Citizen Service Awards this month as part of a continued effort to recognize county residents who are working to improve their communities.
“November’s Citizen Service Award recipients have stepped up to the plate in a time of need,” Freeholder Director Barbara J. McMorrow said. “Each award recipient made a difference when it really mattered and pitched in to help their community and makes the world a little better.”

Glen Goldbaum, of Glen Goldbaum’s Salon of Red Bank, has become an integral part of the eastern Monmouth volunteer community by donating his salon services and hair-styling expertise to the Red Bank Wellness Community Fashion Show Event and supporting the Panel of Autism and the Surfrider Foundation. Goldbaum’s care and commitment to people undergoing cancer treatment and cancer survivors is a people-to-people connection. By sharing his talent and know-how with the cancer event’s models, he reignites self-confidence and helps people put forth a positive attitude.
Also recognized were the Belford Ferry Terminal-based ferry captains of New York Waterways. On Jan. 15, 2009, New York Waterways personnel and ferries were the first on the scene to assist in the lifesaving rescue and emergency evacuation of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River. The first ferry boat arrived at the crash scene in less than three minutes and made the critical difference in the entire rescue operation by getting the first passengers out of the freezing water.
In total, 142 of the 155 passengers on the flight were rescued by New York Waterway personnel and passengers on 14 ferries. The remaining 13 passengers were rescued by other emergency services personnel. Director of Ferry Operations Alan Warren and Ferry boat Capt. Vincent Lombardi and Capt. Manny Liba attended the presentation along with New York Waterways founder Anthony E. Imperatore.
“Monmouth County’s Citizen Service Awards focus on thanking people for getting involved in their communities,” McMorrow said. “We are publicly thanking people who have already taken action to make the county a better place. We hope this will also encourage other residents to get involved and answer their own call to service.”
