Shrewsbury’s Christ Church featured in history series
Latest installment features Four Corners landmark

SHREWSBURY – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders has released the next installment in its online history project that features the Christ Church of Shrewsbury in a four-minute video available for viewing on the county Web site at www.visitmonmouth.com/history.

Joining the county’s “These Historic Places” video series, Christ Church is listed on the national and state registers of historic places and is part of the Four Corners Historic District at the intersection of Broad Street (Route 35) and Sycamore Avenue.

The church and surrounding churchyard provide a glimpse into the locale’s importance in the country’s struggle for independence and to the community it still serves today.

Christ Church Parish was founded in 1702 with the current church structure constructed between 1769 and 1774.  The surrounding churchyard has been used as a burial ground throughout the history of the parish. It serves as a visible historical narrative of Shrewsbury and Monmouth County through the names of those buried during the past 300 years.

“By watching the video you will learn about what is referred to as the ‘vinegar bible’ and the restoration of the stained glass windows,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the county Historical Commission. “Each of our historic videos gives residents a chance to preview some great local history spots and get a glimpse of all that is done to preserve our rich history.”

Residents who visit the county Web site can learn a great deal about county projects. This history project is just one of the many resources available at www.visitmonmouth.com.”

Previous history videos have included the Church of the Presidents in Long Branch, the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, the Strauss Mansion and Museum in Atlantic Highlands, the National Guard Militia Museum in Sea Girt and All Saint’s Memorial Church and Murray farmhouse in Middletown. All videos are available for viewing on the county Web site at www.visitmonmouth.com/history.
