County welcomes bicycle enthusiasts
Local antique bike museum hosts international forum
FREEHOLD – Freeholder Director Barbara J. McMorrow was on hand yesterday at the Metz Bicycle Museum to welcome antique bicycling enthusiasts from around the world to Monmouth County as part of the 20th International Cycling History Conference.
The three-day event is being held in Freehold because of the town’s ties to bicycling history. A.A. Zimmerman, the world’s first bicycle racing champion, called Freehold home. Zimmerman is reported to have also owned and operated a local bicycle manufacturing company in the late 1890s.
The Metz Museum is natural location for part of the conference. The museum includes a world-renowned collection that spans the history of bicycles. The collection includes a replica of what is believed to be the first bicycle invented in 1817.
