Monmouth County Historical Assn featured in history series
Latest installment features history headquarters in Freehold
FREEHOLD – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders has released the next installment in its online history project that features the Monmouth County Historic Association (MCHA) headquarters location, in a four-minute video available for viewing on the county Web site at www.visitmonmouth.com.
Joining the county’s “These Historic Places” video series, is the MCHA Museum and Library, a brick Georgian-style building built in 1931 and designed by architect J. Hallam Conover of Freehold.
Located at 70 Court Street in Freehold, the museum and library provide a permanent home for more than 30,000 objects relating to Monmouth County life. The collections span over three centuries of the lives of Monmouth County residents of virtually every social and economic background. Included in the collections are paintings, watercolors, drawings, furniture, historic clothing, textiles, ceramics, and military items including numerous artifacts from the Battle of Monmouth.
Some of the objects are on view in the museum’s changing exhibitions while many other items are on view at the Association’s historic houses that are open to the public: Allen House (circa 1705) in Shrewsbury; Covenhoven House (circa 1752) in Freehold; Holmes-Hendrickson House (circa 1754) in Holmdel; Marlpit Hall (circa 1756) and Taylor-Butler House (circa 1853) both in Middletown.
“The video series gives residents a chance to preview some great local history spots and get a glimpse of all that is done to preserve our rich history,” Freeholder Lillian G. Burry said. “Residents who visit the county Web site can learn a great deal about county projects – this history project is just one of the many resources available at www.visitmonmouth.com.”
“Viewers who watch this video all the way through will receive a gift from the Historic Association!” Burry added.
Previous videos are available for viewing on the county Web site at www.visitmonmouth.com/history. To date, the videos have featured the Church of the Presidents in Long Branch, the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, the Strauss Mansion and Museum in Atlantic Highlands, the National Guard Militia Museum in Sea Girt and All Saint’s Memorial Church and Murray farmhouse in Middletown.
