American Red Cross Day recognized by Freeholders

Freeholder Director Barbara J. McMorrow celebrates American Red Cross DayFREEHOLD – In honor of the 128th anniversary of the American Red Cross, the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders recognized the efforts of the Jersey Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross for its contributions to making Monmouth County a better and safer place to live and gave the organization a car.

“The Jersey Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross reaches out and into our community every day,” said Freeholder Director Barbara J. McMorrow.  “To respond more quickly and to more people, the county is donating a 2000 Ford Explorer to their Rapid Response program. This means that Jersey Coast Chapter staff members will be able to mobilize resources and access disaster sites with even greater efficiency.”

In 2008, the Jersey Coast Chapter trained more than 62,000 adults and children in community disaster education and responded to 89 emergencies assisting more than 1,000 adults and children, gave 455 emergency communications to families of our local military and trained more than 42,660 people in lifesaving skills, CPR and first aid.

“The Jersey Coast Chapter consistently supports our Armed Forces, conducts a blood donation program and provides lifesaving courses in first aid, CPR, water safety, lifeguard training, baby-sitting and pet first aid,” said McMorrow.  “They also support the efforts of the county’s Office of Emergency Management when called upon. We looked forward to continuing this very effective working relationship.”

The American Red Cross, founded in 1881 by Clara Barton, serves the United States and the world by providing critical aid and assistance to people afflicted by personal, local, national or international disasters.  In times of war and international strife, the Red Cross also provides vital services for the military personnel and their families.
