Monmouth County freeholders celebrate Girl Scout week

FREEHOLD – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders joined the celebration of girl scouting by proclaiming March 8-14 as Girl Scout Week and presented a proclamation to scouts from Freehold Troop No. 222 at last night’s Freeholder’s meeting.

Freeholder Director Barbara J. McMorrow, a former Girl Scout, presented the proclamation to the Freehold troop, which represented the 16,000 girls of the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore council.

“Girl scouting is a proud tradition in our nation, our state and our county,” McMorrow said. “In 1912, Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts, believing that all girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally and spiritually. Now, almost 100 years later, the Girl Scouts of America organization still provides an accepting and nurturing environment, where girls can build character and skills for success, personal development and life’s journey.

“Adult volunteers help girls develop qualities that will serve them throughout their lives,” McMorrow continued. “Qualities such as leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction help girls develop to their own potential and realize their self-worth. My thanks to the leaders for answering a call to service.”

During the week of March 8-14, 2009, more than 3.7 million Girl Scouts and adult members throughout the United States will celebrate Girl Scout Week, and honor the organization’s 97th Anniversary.
