Freeholders oppose closing borough’s post office
Closure would force downtown business owners to drive two miles

FREEHOLD – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders has adopted a resolution opposing a consideration by the U.S. Postal Service to close the Freehold Borough Post Office.

“Freehold Borough is a bustling county seat, with a courthouse, Hall of Records, county government and associated agencies all located here,” Freeholder Director Barbara J. McMorrow said. “There also are numerous businesses and restaurants with a high demand for postal services.”

The Freehold Borough post office is on Lafayette Street, behind the Hall of Records. Closing it would force people to drive more than two miles away to use the post office in Freehold Township.

“It’s not an easy two miles to drive,” Freeholder Lillian G. Burry said. “The Freehold Township post office is located in a busy shopping mall on Route 537, a chronically congested road. It’s probably one of the more congested areas of Monmouth County today.”

Currently, Monmouth County provides the space for the Freehold Borough post office free of charge. Therefore, there is not rental or lease payments for operations.

The Postal Service is considering shutting the post office because of financial concerns.
