County receives $2.1 million for housing programs
Federal subsidy will be distributed among nonprofit agencies

FREEHOLD – Monmouth County has been awarded $2.1 million in Continuum of Care funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, a 23 percent increase over the amount received last year. The county’s allocation rose from eighth in the state to seventh.

“This funding provides permanent and transitional housing to our homeless population, and funds important services such as job training, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment and child care,” said Freeholder Amy H. Mallet, liaison to the county’s Department of Human Services. “This is wonderful news at a time when the economy is in a downturn.”

Continuum of Care grants are awarded through a national competition of local governments, and is the result of collaborative efforts by the Monmouth County Planning Board’s Community Development Section and the Department of Human Services’ Division of Planning and Contracting.
