August 19 event for kids, crafts and composting

FREEHOLD, NJ – The Rutgers Master Gardeners of Monmouth County and 4-H Youth Development Program are hosting the “Birds, Bugs and Beyond festival featuring live performances, games and crafts for children and adults to explore nature from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Monmouth County Agricultural Building, 4000 Kozloski Rd.

Birds, Bugs and Beyond is a hands-on fun day for families to learn about the beneficial creatures in our home gardens and lawns,” Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry said. “This event furthers the efforts of our Master Gardeners and 4-H club members to educate residents of all ages and of all gardening interests. Bring your gardening questions and you can have them answered, too.”

The theme of this year’s free event is “Adventures in Nature” and will feature children’s activities with displays of insects and birds and other garden creatures. Planned activities include: the sensational Rappin’ with Raptors Show from Tenafly Nature Center, make and take crafts, games, composting and vermicomposting (with worms), garden tours and displays featuring bats, butterflies, birds and insects.

New this year, will be displays of animal tracks and scat identification, farm animals, and information provided by the Monmouth County Mosquito Division. Attendees will also be able to view a beehive and learn how honey is harvested. There will also be an opportunity to experience Monarch butterflies and ladybugs up close.

Monmouth County 4-H Club members will participate by showcasing some of their rabbits, reptiles and chickens with visitors. Master Gardeners are experts in all things related to home gardening in Monmouth County and the group will host a free Master Gardener Helpline Table at the event.

“Birds, Bugs and Beyond” will be held rain or shine. For additional information, please call the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Monmouth County at 732-431-7260.
