County competition encourages visiting historic sites

FREEHOLD – Monmouth County’s fifth grade students are invited to write a one page essay about how a local historical place helped them appreciate history more and submit it to the Monmouth County Historical Commission in the Hall of Records, Room 201, Freehold, NJ 07728 by March 12.

Eligibility information and rules are available on the Monmouth County Web site at www.visitmonmouth.com/history.  Members of the Monmouth County Historical Commission will judge the essays for writing skills, accuracy and neatness.  First, second and third place winners will receive savings bonds.

“The best part of this essay contest is that our local 5th graders are getting out and seeing the wonderful historic treasures here in Monmouth County,” said Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry.  “The county’s historic treasures at Historic Walnford in Upper Freehold and Historic Longstreet Farm in Holmdel are joined by community historic sights that weave together the tale of Monmouth County. I look forward to reading about our historic treasures from this youthful perspective.”
