Come out and play this winter
County parks offer fun for all

FREEHOLD – There is a whole lot to enjoy in the great outdoors this winter and the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders reminds residents that with or without snow, they should visit and enjoy their county parks.

“Layer your clothes, put on your hat and gloves and some sturdy walking shoes and head out to a county park this winter,” Freeholder Lillian G. Burry said. “There is so much to do and see and we want residents to enjoy their parks all year long.”

The staff of the Park System has put together a list of some great ideas to get you out and into the county parks:

  • Take Your Camera for a Walk
Winter is the coolest time of year for a walk in the woods. Its peace and tranquility are the perfect balance to the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Now that the trees have lost their leaves, it is easier to spot the wildlife that call the county parks home. Capture the stark beauty of the season with your camera. You can take images of leaves, pinecones and other nature artifacts and later identify them online.
  • Swing into Action on a Playground
The cure for cabin fever is as simple as a trip to the playground (and the Park System has lots of playgrounds throughout the county). Besides a healthy dose of fresh air, the playground gets youngsters moving. Who can resist the slides, swings, and climbing equipment? Join in the fun by racing to the playground, following down the slide or swinging alongside your child.
  • Step Back in Time
Stroll into the past by visiting one of the Park System’s two historic sites – Historic Walnford in Upper Freehold and Historic Longstreet Farm in Holmdel. Both offer unique glimpses into the county’s rich past. At Historic Walnford enjoy the architecture of the elegant Waln House, the calmness of Crosswicks Creek and the beauty of the season. Historic Longstreet Farm actively interprets the 1890s with its period-attired staff, livestock and Victorian farm house.
  • Explore a Beach – It’s Not Just a Summer Thing You might want to really bundle up for this one – but it will be worth it! There’s no telling what treasures may be found – an interesting rock or shell, winter birds or a grand adventure. Dig in the sand, build a castle or throw pebbles into the water. Budding scientists can bring a journal and return throughout the year to note differences.
  • Have a Ball with a Ball
You probably already have one at home. So bring it to one of the open fields in the Park System and let your imagination go wild. Play a game of catch, see who can throw the highest or kick the furthest. You can even make up your own game.
Whether you take one of these suggestions or follow your own path to recreation, rest assured that time spent outdoors in nature is well spent. And when the snow does begin to fall; head to the sledding hill at Holmdel Park, Holmdel or go cross-country skiing in a county park. For the most current information about ice skating and sledding call 732-842-4000, extension 36.

So whether it’s snowy or just plain chilly, the Monmouth County Park System is the place to be this winter. To learn more about the Monmouth County Park System visit www.monmouthcountyparks.com or call 732- 842-4000.
