“This title was earned by students who combined the teamwork needed in athletics with the disciplined mindset needed to excel in the classroom,” said Freeholder Deputy Director Serena DiMaso, who is the County’s liaison with the Superintendent of Schools. “In many contests, CBA is usually the hunted and is targeted as the school to beat. The national chess competition was no different. The boys displayed resiliency and the fortitude necessary to succeed in every competition. This achievement should be lauded by everyone who lives in the County and throughout New Jersey.”

 

The 2015-16 season was a standout for CBA Chess, which includes first place showings at the NJ Grade Championships; the 46th Annual National Chess Congress Tournament in Philadelphia; the New York City Championships; and a second place showing at the US Chess Federation’s National K-12 Grade Championships in Orlando, FL.

CBA Chess is led by math teacher and head coach Mr. Patrick Melosh, and assistant coach Brian Meinders.

“The whole state is proud of this exceptional accomplishment, as well as the freeholders, parents, fellow students and alumni,” stated Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone. “Just as endurance, discipline and physical stamina are important in academics and extra-curricular activities, these qualities are needed when competing in chess. Many of the same rigors are required to succeed in any competition, including chess.”

At their regular meeting on April 28, the Freeholders presented the team members with certificates of recognition on their national title.

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, founded in 1918, is a voluntary, non-profit organization made up of 433 accredited public, private and non-public high schools in the state. The NJSIAA conducts tournaments, and crowns champions in thirty-one sports.
