County offers residents help in getting rid of computer/electronic components
TINTON FALLS – If you recently purchased of received the gift of a new computer, camera or stereo component this holiday season, you may be wondering what to do with your old equipment.
Sure, you could recycle usable computer and electronic equipment to friends or family members, but when the equipment is no longer usable, you should recycle it at the county Reclamation Center on Shafto Road in Tinton Falls.
“Computer and electronic equipment should not be disposed of with your regular trash,” said Freeholder William C. Barham, liaison to the county’s public works area. “The county continues to be proactive in removing things from our waste stream and we encourage residents to do their part to help by making use of the county’s services in Tinton Falls for computer and electronics recycling.”
Acceptable items in the county’s computer and electronics recycling effort include telephones, cameras, radios, stereo components, VCRs, DVD players, desktop copiers, scrap metal wire, computers cases, CPUs, keyboards, computer mice, monitors, scanners, printers, cables, smaller televisions and laptops and peripherals. Non-acceptable items include: console /large screen televisions, kitchen appliances and stereo speakers.
The maximum amount of computer and electronic equipment that may be dropped off is limited to five cubic yards - approximately what will fit in the bed of a regular pick-up truck.
“Electronics can improve the way we live, work and play – but they should not have an impact on the environment.” said Freeholder Barbara J. McMorrow. “We need to reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink! These 4 Rs help illustrate how residents can responsibly reduce their energy use, reuse products, recycle their electronics and rethink how they use technology.”
Days and hours of drop-off for computer and electronics equipment at the county Reclamation Center, Shafto Road entrance are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, use the Asbury Ave. entrance from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, the Asbury Ave. entrance is open from 7 a.m. to 12 noon. The facility is closed on Sunday and the New Year’s, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
