Care Center auction set for Oct. 20

County moves forward with plan to sell both nursing home facilities

FREEHOLD, NJ –Monmouth County’s two Care Centers, John L. Montgomery Care Center (JLM) and Geraldine L. Thompson Care Center (GLT), will be put up for public auction at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at the Monmouth County Agricultural Building, 4000 Kozloski Rd.

“The operation of the Monmouth County Care Centers has put significant financial stress on the County’s operating budget for more than a decade,” said Freeholder John P. Curley, liaison to the Care Centers.

The Board of Chosen Freeholders has specified the terms and conditions of the sale.

“The Board has specified several items related to the continuing care of the residents and the employment of the current Care Center staff,” said Freeholder Director Gary J. Rich. “Following the sale, the successful bidder must operate each facility as a nursing home for at least ten years and provide a job interview to all County employees at the two Care Centers.”

The complete Notice of Sale and the Agreement of Sale is posted on the County website at VisitMonmouth.com.

There will be three separate auctions: one for JLM and GLT individually and one for purchase of both facilities together. The facilities will be sold to the highest bidder.

“The Board of Chosen Freeholders has been working toward the sale of the facilities with great consideration for the residents and staff at JLM and GLT,” said Curley. “We are expecting to sell the facilities to a provider that can deliver the needed services to the Care Center residents while providing job interviews to our current staff as appropriate.”

The process to convey the facilities and operation of the both facilities has advanced in accordance with local land use law and requirements of the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJ Dept. of Health).

The County plans to transfer the facilities to new ownership no later than Dec. 31, 2015. Transfer of the facilities must be approved by the NJ Dept. of Health.

In 2014, the Care Centers operated at a combined loss of $6.7 million.

The two Care Centers, John L. Montgomery (JLM) Care Center and Geraldine L. Thompson (GLT), offer a wide array of services and have served the County and its residents since the 1920s.

Both are long-term care facilities that provide eligible people with skilled, quality health care in a clean, safe and homelike environment. Nursing and rehabilitation services are provided by committed and caring staff in both Medicare and Medicaid facilities.

JLM Care Center is a 174-bed facility located in Freehold Borough. JLM offers geriatric care services and specializes in long term care for residents with neurological impairments that include multiple sclerosis, significant developmental disabilities and severe brain and spinal cord injuries.

GLT Care Center is a 135-bed facility located in Wall Township. GLT specializes in long term living for the elderly, with a strong history of caring for the infirm and elderly of Monmouth and Ocean Counties since the mid 1920’s. GLT Care Center has specialized Sub-Acute and Palliative care units.

The Monmouth County Care Centers have exceeded all professional standards in New Jersey and consistently meet State and Federal regulations.

On March 24, 2015 the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders voted in the affirmative to authorize the County Administrator and County Counsel to take the steps necessary to privatize JLM and GLT.  The vote followed a public meeting to hear a presentation about the two Care Centers, discuss the possibility of selling one or both of the facilities and to hear public comment on the topic.
