Exhibit on World War I to take center stage

MANALAPAN, NJ – Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon is reminding residents and visitors that Archives and History Day will take place on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters, 125 Symmes Dr. Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon and Monmouth County Archivist Gary Saretzky prepare for Archives and History Day, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters in Manalapan, NJ.

“After many months of hard work, the planning for Archives and History Day is now completed,” said Hanlon. “This year promises to be a great event with something for everyone to enjoy. So, bring the family, enjoy the exhibits and presentations and learn something new about New Jersey’s history.”

As the County’s caretaker of historic documents for the past 26 years, the County Clerk’s Archives staff has prepared a month-long exhibit, opening Oct.1, entitled, “New Jersey in Focus: The World War I Era.”

“As in previous wars, New Jersey played a significant role during what was then often called the Great War or the World War,” Monmouth County Archivist Gary Saretzky said. “Almost 70,000 New Jersey men, including many African Americans, were inducted into military service. Large military camps were established, including Fort Dix and the facility, initially called Camp Little Silver, then Camp Alfred Vail, which became Fort Monmouth.”

The exhibit draws on the holdings of the Archives, other repositories, and personal collections. The exhibit features aspects of the pivotal 1910-1920 decade with an emphasis on New Jersey. There are items that relate to innovations in transportation and agriculture, the attractions of the Jersey Shore and the women’s suffrage movement, along with other challenging issues such as child labor, race relations, extremes of wealth and poverty and the spiraling cost of living.

Archives and History Day will also feature a Monmouth County History Forum on Fort Monmouth, World War I and Monmouth County, a history game with prizes, and more than 60 exhibitors from across New Jersey showcasing and promoting the history of the area. A complete schedule of the day’s events can be found at www.visitmonmouth.com.

During the plenary session from 11 a.m. to noon, the inaugural M. Clare French Award for Leadership in Historic Preservation will be presented to Lillian G. Burry for her historical preservation efforts and the Jane Clayton Award will be presented to Joseph W. Hammond for his work in the fields of historical research, archival processing, historic preservation and curatorial work.

“Both of these recipients are very deserving of recognition,” Hanlon said.

At 12:10 p.m., Monmouth County Historian Randall Gabrielan and featured speaker, Melissa Ziobro, will host a discussion on Fort Monmouth, World War I and Monmouth County. At 1 p.m., Melissa Ziobro will present “Fort Monmouth and Monmouth County in World War I.”

A tour of the Monmouth County Archives will be available by advance registration.  If you are interested in the 2:15 p.m. tour, contact Shelagh Reilly at sreilly@co.monmouth.nj.us
