County salutes Veterans
County offices will be closed on Tuesday in observance of holiday

FREEHOLD – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders salute all the brave men and women, past and present, who have served in the Armed Forces and fought in American wars.

“On Veterans Day we celebrate American liberties and we remember the price that is paid for that freedom,” Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry said. “I ask that you take a moment on this day to remember and thank our courageous American soldiers. Their courage is a testament to the freedoms we continue to protect today.”

In observance of Veterans Day 2008 most county offices will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 11. All county parks and golf courses will remain open.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in American wars. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that there were 23.6 million military veterans in the United States in 2007.
