County salutes Veterans

County offices will be closed on Tuesday in observance of holiday

 

FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders salute all the brave men and women, past and present, who have served in the Armed Forces and fought in American wars.

 

“On Veterans Day we celebrate American liberties and we remember the price that is paid for that freedom,” Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry said. “I ask that you take a moment on this day to remember and thank our courageous American soldiers. Their courage is a testament to the freedoms we continue to protect today.”

 

In observance of Veterans Day 2014, most County offices will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 11. All County parks and golf courses will remain open.

 

“The County’s Veterans Services Office is a year-round resource for our veterans and their families,” said Freeholder John P. Curley, liaison to the County’s Veterans Services Office. “They offer assistance with everything from filing for benefits to home loan assistance to counseling services referrals.”

 

Veterans can stop by the office located at 3000 Kozloski Road in Freehold from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday, call 732-683-8675 or visit the Veterans Services section of the County website at www.visitmonmouth.com.

 

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in American wars.
