FREEHOLD, NJ – Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in 1985 with the mission of raising public awareness of the importance of mammograms as the most effective tool in the detection of breast cancers.

To support this mission, the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders has designated the month of October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in Monmouth County.

“National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is dedicated to increasing public knowledge about the importance of early detection of breast cancer,” said Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry. “This is done by collaborating with national public service organizations, professional associations, and government agencies who work together to ensure that the importance of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month message is heard and understood.”

Working through a nationwide education campaign, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is dedicated to increasing awareness of making mammography screening part of a preventive health care routine and encouraging expanded efforts to reach women who are older, of a racial or ethnic minority group or are economically disadvantaged.

Although research and advocacy have been part of the significant advances that have been made in the fight against breast cancer, we must include uterine cancer and ovarian cancer in our drive to express the importance of promoting early detection, information, funding, research, screening guidelines, treatment options and risk factors associated with this diseases.
