Leave the fireworks to the professionals

Officials remind residents, fireworks are illegal and dangerous

 

FREEHOLD, NJ – Monmouth County residents and visitors are reminded that consumer possession of fireworks is illegal in New Jersey and that fires started by fireworks put further strain on emergency services throughout Monmouth County.

“With the Independence Day holiday upon us, it is important to understand the risks of illegal fireworks,” Freeholder John P. Curley said. “Our professional and volunteer firefighters and emergency medical responders already have enough on their plates. Let’s help them remain focused by avoiding creating fires through the use of fireworks.”

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) released a Fireworks report which explores fire and injury dangers related to consumer fireworks. The report shows that in 2011, 9,600 fireworks-related injuries were treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms.

“Residents should be staying clear of fireworks,” Sheriff Shaun Golden said. “Law enforcement will not tolerate the use of fireworks by consumers. Be safe and be smart: leave the fireworks displays to the trained professionals.”

Between June 25, 2013 and July 15, 2013 the Monmouth County 9-1-1 Communications Center received a total of 144 fireworks related complaints.

The NFPA report shows that an estimated 17,800 reported fires were started by fireworks in 2011. These fires resulted in an estimated 40 civilian injuries and $32 million in direct property damage.

“Be safe and be smart: leave the fireworks displays to the trained professionals,” Fire Marshal Henry Stryker III said. “Let’s have a great July 4th holiday and enjoy the community fireworks celebrations that will be held in many Monmouth County towns.”
