County surplus auction going high-tech – all online
Sale of used property begins Saturday and runs through Sept. 24

Monmouth County inventory goes on the auction blockFREEHOLD – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders has announced that the entire 2008 Monmouth County surplus auction will be conducted online this year. The auction will begin at 8 a.m. this Saturday, Sept. 20, and close at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24.

“We are very excited about this year’s auction being online because it allows us to reach many more bidders, which ultimately will result in better sales,” Freeholder William C. Barham said. “Last year the county sold just two items online and we nearly doubled our buyer base.”

Seized and surplus property of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Motor Pool, Bridge Department and Park System will be auctioned. The auction will be conducted by Steven J. Miranti Auction Liquidation Services of Eatontown. A complete list of the items included in the 2008 auction may be found online at http://www.govauctionlistservices.com. Pictures and descriptions, as well as terms of sale and other relevant information, are available.

Vehicles make up a good share of the items to hit the auction block. More than 100 cars, trucks and vans are up for sale. Also on the auction list: office equipment, lawn mowers, grounds and turf equipment, chain saws, food concession equipment and other miscellaneous items.

Every item on the auction block is available for viewing online. Successful bidders will be required to pick up their purchases at the county’s Department of Public Works and Engineering, 250 Center St., Freehold Township, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, and Monday, Sept. 29.

In addition to broadening the bidder base, having the entire auction online eliminates overtime that had been accrued in past auctions.

“Last year, the auction cost taxpayers some overtime because it was held on the weekend and staff needed to be present,” Freeholder Deputy Director Robert D. Clifton said. “Having the auction online enables us to eliminate that unneeded expense altogether.

“Going forward, we will be having more auctions online throughout the year,” he added.
