County memorial to stay open late for remembrance
ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders reminds residents that the Monmouth County 9/11 Memorial at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook, 460 Ocean Blvd. will be open until 11 p.m. this week.
The county park will be open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, Sept. 10, 11, 12 and 13 to provide additional opportunities for park patrons to visit and reflect on the events of the day.
The County will also mark the events of Sept. 11, 2001 with a brief flag ceremony and presentation of flowers on the Monmouth County 9/11 Memorial. The ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m.
Monmouth County’s 9/11 Memorial has three symbolic components: a timeline walkway to recollect the events of Sept. 11, 2001; a stone base carved with the names, ages and hometowns of the 147 county residents who lost their lives that day; and an eagle sculpture with a beam from one of the fallen World Trade Center towers. Set against views of New York, the memorial honors both the lives lost and the fearless display of heroism by rescue teams and citizens who responded to the tragedy.
Monmouth County’s 9/11 Memorial was dedicated in 2005 and made possible through donations made to Monmouth County’s 9/11 Memorial Committee.
