Go Red with Monmouth County
Feb. 7 is National Wear Red Day
FREEHOLD, NJ – As part of National Heart Month, the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders is asking Monmouth County residents to “go red” by wearing red on National Wear Red Day, this Friday, Feb. 7.
“The Board hopes that residents and County employees will show their support by wearing red this Friday to bring attention to heart disease,” said Freeholder Serena DiMaso. “Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States, claiming more lives than all forms of cancer.”
National Wear Red Day is the first week of February. Today, more than 1.75 million men and women have registered to Go Red for Women.
“Heart disease is called a silent killer because it often has no noticeable symptoms,” said Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry. “It is important to do whatever we can to bring attention to heart disease and encourage women to know their risk and take action.”
The American Heart Association launched Go Red for Women in 2003 after research revealed that heart disease was by far the number one killer of women, and actually killed more women than men.
“This year marks the tenth birthday of Go Red for Women,” said Freeholder Deputy Director Gary J. Rich, Sr. “Over the past ten years, the Go Red movement has raised awareness and has led to 34% less women dying from heart disease, saving 330 lives a day. Please join Monmouth County in this movement and Go Red on Friday, Feb. 7.”
