Monmouth artists bring home state honors once again
Howell resident receives award for ‘Best in Show’
FREEHOLD – Ten Monmouth County residents came up winners in the 2008 statewide senior citizen art contest sponsored by the New Jersey Association of Area Agencies on Aging.
Carol Gleason of Howell, Stephen Ravner of Freehold, Paul Puliese of Long Branch, Joan Wallace of Manasquan, Guido Guazzoni of Wayside, Robert Herbert of Neptune, Gail Joseph of Long Branch, Dorothy Lawrence of Marlboro, Patty Ryan of Marlboro and Avram Shapiro of Adelphia were recognized among the 226 entries in the professional and nonprofessional categories. Carol Gleason was judged the overall Best in Show in the nonprofessional division.
“There are some truly outstanding and talented, active adults in Monmouth County,” said Freeholder Barbara J. McMorrow, liaison to the Monmouth County Division on Aging, Disabilities and Veterans’ Interment and Affairs. The agency coordinates Monmouth County’s entries each year.
“Special kudos to Carol Gleason for her remarkable and whimsical sculpture ‘Time for a Fish Story,’” McMorrow added. “While Carol may have taken up sculpture just over a year ago, her love of the medium and art is quite clear!”
Fifteen winners from Monmouth County’s Senior Citizen Juried Art Contest competed in the state competition. All were first-place winners in Monmouth County’s Senior Juried Art Contest and Exhibition held earlier this summer.
Photographs of all the winning artwork is posted on the Monmouth County Web site at www.visitmonmouth.com/aging.
A reception recognizing all of the statewide winners will be held Sept. 26 at the Hunterdon County Complex, Flemington. The New Jersey Association of Area Agencies on Aging hosts the competition with the assistance of the 16 participating counties, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services and the New Jersey Foundation for Aging.
