County’s 9/11 remembrance scheduled
Mount Mitchill to stay open until 11 p.m. on Sept. 10, 11 and 12

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – A public remembrance ceremony will be held at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Monmouth County’s 9/11 Memorial located at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook. The ceremony will be held rain or shine.

“The County’s 9/11 Memorial honors the lives lost and the fearless displays of heroism by rescue teams and citizens on Sept. 11, 2001,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the County Park System. “Each subsequent Sept. 11 we gather to remember our friends and neighbors while we recall the profound effect the day had on America.”

The remembrance ceremony will include a flag salute, invocation and flowers placed at the memorial. The guest speaker will be Capt. David J. “Fuzz” Harrison, former Commanding Officer at Naval Weapons Station Earle.

“It is important to keep the memories of those we lost on 9/11 close to our hearts,” said Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone. “This annual ceremony is the County’s way of honoring those who saved lives and those who lost their lives on that infamous day.”

Overflow parking will be available at East Point Plaza, 2390 Highway 36, Atlantic Highlands. Shuttle buses will be provided.

Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook, Ocean Boulevard, will also be open until 11 p.m. on Sept. 10, 11 and 12 for park patrons to visit the County’s 9/11 Memorial. The park opens daily at 8 a.m.

Set against views of New York City, the Monmouth County 9/11 Memorial has three symbolic components: a timeline walkway to recollect the events of the day; a stone base carved with the names, ages and hometowns of the 147 Monmouth County residents who lost their lives that day; and an eagle sculpture with a beam from one of the fallen World Trade Center towers.

The County’s 9/11 Memorial was made possible through donations to Monmouth County’s 9/11 Memorial Committee. For more information about the remembrance ceremony or the park’s extended hours, call 732- 842-4000, ext. 4312 or visit www.monmouthcountyparks.com
