Freeholders celebrate parks and recreation
FREEHOLD – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders has proclaimed the month of July 2008 as “Recreation and Parks Month” and called upon all citizens to enjoy the parks and programs available through the county park system.
This year’s Recreation and Parks Month celebrates the efforts of employees and volunteers who keep parks clean and safe for visitors, organize activities and provide programming on fitness, health, nature awareness, outdoor adventures, gardening and more.
“This focus helps to showcase the importance of parks and the people who make sure the county parks are open 365 days a year for the use and enjoyment of all residents and visitors,” said Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the park system. “We appreciate that they work hard, so we have a place to relax.”
The staff of the county parks includes park rangers, professional recreation staff, park planners and support staff who join with more than 1,000 volunteers to provides opportunities for people to come together and experience a sense of community. In 2007, the Monmouth County Park System welcomed approximately five million visitors to the more than 14,288 acres of parkland.
The Board of Chosen Freeholders champions the ongoing preservation of open space for public use and enjoyment by actively supporting county and local efforts to protect and manage green spaces and water resources.
