Arnone named ‘Freeholder of the Year’

New Jersey mayors’ group recognizes his leadership

FREEHOLD, NJ – Monmouth County Freeholder Thomas A. Arnone has been named 2012 “Freeholder of the Year” by the New Jersey Conference of Mayors.

Arnone, a Monmouth County freeholder since 2011 and a former mayor of Neptune City, is completing his first three-year term on the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, having been elected in November 2010. He is deputy director of the Board.

“It takes a special kind of person to be a public servant, and I am humbled by this recognition,” said Arnone, who served as mayor of Neptune City from 2004 through 2010. “It’s not easy being a mayor, but the rewards come in the form of improving the lives of your friends, families and neighbors.”

The award was given out at the New Jersey Conference of Mayors’ annual event held at the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City last week. While at the event, Arnone also served on a statewide panel on shared services with Sen. Stephen M. Sweeney, Assemblyman John F. Amodeo and other elected officials.

Arnone has spearheaded Monmouth County’s shared services effort and, with the support of the Board of Chosen Freeholders, created the Office of Shared Services. Today, the Monmouth County Office of Shared Services is the most active and progressive shared services agency in the state with about 100 shared services agreements with local municipalities.

“Sharing services is the best and most immediate way to trim expenses and lower taxes,” Arnone said. “We have a proven track record in Monmouth County and we continue to look for opportunities.”

Prior to serving as mayor of Neptune City, Arnone was a councilman from 1997 to 2003 and held  positions including police commissioner, public works commissioner and finance committee chairman.

During his tenure in Neptune City, he also served as director of the Neptune City Office of Emergency Management. He served Neptune City as a member of the Land Use, Planning, and Recreation boards as well as the Shade Tree Commission, Environmental Committee, Community Development Block Grant committee and the Alliance to Prevent Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

Arnone has been active in statewide professional organizations.  He became president of the New   Jersey Conference of Mayors in 2010 after serving a term as the Vice President. He is also an active member of the New Jersey League of Municipalities as a member of the State Resolutions Committee and Nominating Committee.

As freeholder, Arnone’s responsibilities include oversight of Public Works and Engineering, Economic Development, Workforce Development, Public Information and Tourism, Shared Services and the Mosquito Extermination Commission.

Tom Arnone is a graduate of Neptune High School and attended Brookdale Community College. He and his wife, Catherine, reside in Neptune City with their daughter, Lauren.
