Freeholders recognize State Consumer Bowl winners

Freeholder McMorrow preseents proclamationFREEHOLD – The Monmouth County Board ofChosen Freeholders has proclaimed June 10, 2008 as “Freehold Township Consumer Bowl Team Day” in recognition of the team of local teens who were crowned champions in the 2008 New Jersey State Consumer Bowl held in May at the State House in Trenton.

“These students really tested their knowledge of consumer protection and have made their town and county proud,” said Freeholder Barbara J. McMorrow, a Freehold resident and former teacher at Freehold Township High School. “In preparing for the competition, these young adults gain valuable knowledge about topics that affect their daily lives. Additionally, they learn to recognize and remedy bad business practices related to fraud, deceit and misrepresentation in the sale of goods and services.”

Members of the Freehold Township High School team are Kendall Ryan, Erik Gussey, Frank DeRose, Brandon Egan and Nicole Mularzi. They were led by business education teacher Lydia Wagner, a long-time supporter, advocate, and moderator of the Consumer Bowl.

While accepting the proclamation on behalf of the students, Ms. Wagner explained to the Board of Chosen Freeholders that winning the state competition has been a long-time goal for the team. The goal was originally set by Freehold Township High School graduate (class of 2000) and founding team member Nicholas V. Novielli. Novielli passed away in 2002 and is remembered in a scholarship named in his memory and commitment to the Consumer Bowl team.

The competition began locally in January as a project of the county’s Department of Consumer Affairs, when students from Freehold Township, Marlboro and Manalapan high schools participated in the county’s Consumer Bowl held in late January. The team from Freehold Township High School emerged as winners and went on to win the regional competition in April and the state competition in May. Throughout the competition, teams answered questions in a multiple choice and open-ended format.

The New Jersey High School Consumer Bowl was established in 1997 to help students learn about consumer issues that will benefit them throughout their lives.
